The Wrong Comparison
When people try to place this moment, they reach for the internet: a new channel, a new gold rush, a new chance to be early. I understand the instinct, and I think it undersells what is happening. The internet mostly changed distribution. It moved where work went and who could reach an audience, while the machine on the desk stayed roughly the same. What is changing now is what one person can produce at that desk in the first place. The closer rhyme is the arrival of the personal computer.
In 1990, Steve Jobs described the computer as a bicycle for the mind. He was borrowing from a Scientific American study on the efficiency of locomotion: the condor was the most efficient animal on the chart, humans placed unimpressively, and a human on a bicycle beat everything. The point was never the machine. The point was the multiplier on the person. The bicycle multiplied what legs could do. This one multiplies what attention and curiosity can do, and it fills in expertise you do not have while you ride. On the voice memo where this essay started, I put it less elegantly: like being able to control multiple bicycles with your mind. I stand by the feeling.
The Temperature Check
Every couple of months I would run the same experiment: try to rebuild my personal website with whatever the AI tools of the moment were. It was my temperature check for how useful this had actually become for someone with my skillset. I knew enough HTML and CSS to be useful, gone rusty through years of no-code tools. The month the check finally passed, I ditched the no-code stack and rebuilt the site with my agent. That was impressive, and it was still mostly a faster way to do something I could already do myself.
The real shift came after. Tools. Databases. User systems. Live connections to outside data. Things I had never been able to build, no matter how many times I told myself I would finally learn Python. It never stuck, because unlike design I had no daily need for it. Now I am immersed in code every day, and I have an interpreter: something that explains, in my terms, how to get from where I am to what I intend, and keeps me inside well-established practice on the way. Learning this way is like learning any language. Raw effort in isolation is nothing next to immersion and a personalized guide.
The Curriculum Never Kept Up
I recognized the shape of this problem long before AI addressed it. I went into college assuming it would be different from the classrooms before it, and it was rather the same: learn the curriculum, do not veer off course, do not jump ahead. Almost nothing being used in the wild that year made it into the syllabus. That is not a scandal, it is a constraint. A curriculum can only update so fast, and it is built for the broadest possible usefulness, not for the person in the seat. So I learned on the job instead, and I stopped expecting institutions to keep pace with tools.
That is what makes this moment feel different from every previous wave I have learned my way through. For the first time, the guide is personal. It meets me at my exact level, on the exact problem in front of me, at whatever hour I show up. The individual still has to bring clear intent and a strong hand. Confidence in the destination and humility about the route turn out to work fine together.
This Is Not a Case for Working Alone
The easy misread is isolation: the solo builder who needs nobody. That is not the claim. Teams still produce things no individual can, and other people remain the fastest error correction there is. The claim is narrower. Work that used to require an organization's combined bandwidth and specialized expertise is now attemptable by one person willing to go find out. The question flipped from "what do I need others for" to "what can I now attempt alone," and just asking it changes what you build next.
Curiosity stopped being optional. The people who do well in what is coming will be the ones who extend their own capabilities and keep learning from other people while they do it. I keep testing what one person can build now. The answer keeps getting bigger.
